2012 Canadian Down Syndrome Day Heroes

World Down Syndrome Day | CDSS Special Edition of Voices/21 Magazine

Magazines For World Down Syndrome Day, the Canadian Down Syndrome Society would like to acknowledge some of the incredible people in Canada’s Down syndrome community. These winners—who will be named the 2012 Canadian Down Syndrome Day Heroes—will be profiled in the upcoming Spring issues of 21 Magazine and Voices, and announced on World Down Syndrome Day, March 21, 2012.

About World Down Syndrome Day

The United Nations recently designated March 21 as World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), after a successful campaign led by Down Syndrome International and the Brazilian Federation of Down Syndrome Associations. Many Canadians participated in this campaign. The WDSD official website is worlddownsyndromeday.org

What is a Canadian Down Syndrome Day Hero?

Canada’s Down Syndrome Day Heroes need to exemplify both the CDSS’s vision and WDSD goals, as outlined below:

CDSS Vision Statement: “A proud Canada, where ALL are welcome, we embrace diversity and we value everyone equally.”

WDSD purpose: “To showcase the abilities and accomplishments of persons with Down syndrome and encourage independence, self-advocacy, and freedom for persons with Down syndrome to make their own choices.”

Hero Nomination Guidelines:

1. Any person can be selected! An individual with Down syndrome, an individual without Down syndrome, or a group of people!
2. There is no age limit; parental consent must be given for heroes under the age of 18.
3. Heroes are not required to be members of the Canadian Down Syndrome Society.
4. Heroes must not be a full or part time paid staff member of the Canadian Down Syndrome Society.

Hero Selection Process:

1. The Canadian Down Syndrome Society will select the Heroes based on the above guidelines.
2. Heroes will be informed of their selection on March 9, 2012. Heroes must keep this information confidential until the official unveiling, March 21, 2012.
3. Up to 10 Heroes will be selected for this honour.
