Sometimes it takes a while for the holiday spirit to find us. Perhaps for Krista (our Executive Director), it was the joy and chaos of having three boys under 12 and (this year) a husband with a broken leg. For Christy (our Public Relations Manager), it might have been organizing a birthday party for over ten eleven year-old girls during an already busy holiday season. Between running his three kids to hockey practice, it's nothing short of a miracle that Kirk (our Advocacy Manager) has time to shop for gifts at all.

Thankfully, this year, little by little, the warmth of the season has crept into all of our hearts because of the following:
  • The paper plate covered in saran wrap, full of home made cookies and squares that just got dropped of by a school teacher in town who came to us this year for support in including a new student with Down syndrome well and truly into the fabric of her classroom.
  • The visit from Justen, our self-advocate summer student who brought cards and a box of chocolates for the entire staff, but more importantly shared a cup of tea and some of the funniest stories about the best moments from his time working with us this past summer.
  • The thank you letter we received last week from a young Mom in rural Quebec who had called us earlier this year when she found out the baby she was carrying would very likely have Down syndrome. She was grateful she had found someone here just after closing time that was willing to listen until she finished talking.
  • The sounds of our children watching Holiday videos in the lunch area of our offices because school is out but our office is still open.
  • The countless greeting cards that have arrived in our offices from organizations engaged in the same work around the world which serve to remind us we are truly not alone.

May the peace, love and contentment of the season find its way into your heart and your actions this year.

As we feast, may we remember those that go hungry. As we join with family and friends may we reflect on those that have no communion in their lives and wander the world feeling alone. May we forget what we give and always remember all that we receive.

May we receive all we need to sustain us and nurture us for the year ahead.

With love and peace in this season of giving,

The Canadian Down Syndrome Society
