With this position statement on Immigration, the aim of the Canadian Down Syndrome Society is to foster a climate of understanding and mutual respect for the dignity, worth and equal rights of all people.

All people, including those with Down syndrome, are a part of their local communities, and shall be recognized as having a rich contribution to make in the development and well being of their community. The mission of the Canadian Down Syndrome Society is to ensure equitable opportunities for all Canadians with Down syndrome.

People with Down syndrome are, with increasing frequency, completing high school, gaining employment, living independently and leading productive and fulfilling lives. Individuals with Down syndrome are attending high school and pursuing higher education at community colleges and universities.

It is impossible to determine the amount of support that will be required by any individual in the future and the level of support needed can fluctuate according to circumstance and personal choices. The same is true for people with Down syndrome.

Canada prides itself as being a society which accepts, honours, respects and values diversity in individuals. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was introduced to guarantee equal treatment for all people. The existing immigration rules along with the Department of Immigration's view of people with Down syndrome is antiquated, prejudicial and in direct contradiction of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The Canadian Down Syndrome Society believes that all immigration applications should be considered respecting the dignity, worth and rights of all people regardless of disability or handicap and an understanding of the value of diversity in Canadian society.
