The  Canadian Down Syndrome Society works to ensure equitable opportunities for all  Canadians with Down syndrome by fostering a climate of understanding and mutual  respect for the dignity, worth and equal rights for ALL people.

The Canadian Down Syndrome Society does not endorse the use of Piracetam in children or adults with Down syndrome.

Piracetam is a drug that is not currently approved for use by Health Canada.

A study evaluating the effect of Piracetam on children with Down syndrome reached the conclusion that Piracetam has not been beneficial in improving the cognitive and/or learning potential of individuals with Down syndrome and could potentially have harmful side effects (Lobaugh et al, 2001).

Lobaugh et al. Piracetam therapy does not enhance cognitive functioning in children with down syndrome. Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.  April 2001.  Vol. 155 (4).  Pages 442-8.
