I remember the excitement with which we awaited Meliah's arrival. We had chosen to adopt a child with Down syndrome, making our experience a little different from families whose children with Down syndrome join them in the more conventional way. We had been well prepared by the social worker and encouraged to find out what we might be getting into, so we knew what resources were available to us even before Meliah arrived. Yes, he was born with Down syndrome, and yes, that created some major problems. My message to all parents of a child with support needs is: You will love this baby as much, if not more than anything you have previously experienced. I say this from the perspective of being a mom to a daughter - born early, requiring life-saving surgery, and constant early medical intervention. Zola has put me through the emotional wringer; and yet I would probably go through it all again, had I had known what joy this little one has brought to my life.

This is my son Mark and he is my second child. I was 34 when he was born and his birth was quite a shock to say the least. All I could think about was the future - what is he going to be able to do? Is he always going to be living with us? I have learned to take one day at a time.
